Beyond Making and Taking: Placing Content at the Center of Learning in the Visual Arts

Massachusetts College of Art in July 14- 25, 2003.

Art teachers are at the center of creative energy and expression in schools, yet they often lack the pedagogical support received by teachers in other subject areas. These two week long sessions, created for Boston Public School teachers, are designed to provide opportunities to reflect on teaching skills and personal artmaking and share ideas amoung peers.

Session one focuses on The Artist Within through an intense studio immersion combined with discussions and group critiques.

Session two concentrates more on content development and pedagogy with brainstorming sessions on selected art topics, teaching and learning models, multicultural connections and presentation opportunities.

Session participants will also learn more about Art Matters: The Art Education Content Network a "virtual drop-in center" being developed by Massart for Massachusett's public school art teachers. Institute participants will create online galleries during the two week sessions, which will be featured at Art Matters. Art Matters: The Art Education Content Network will be officially launched, November 2003
