October 12-30 The Arnheim Gallery becomes the Mary McFadden Project Room
In conjunction with the Mary McFadden: Goddesses exhibition in the Bakalar Gallery, the Gallery Education staff invites MassArt students, faculty, and staff and members of the community to the Arnheim Gallery to explore the traditional and contemporary handwork skills that characterize Mary McFadden's designs. Led by Mass Art students from Fashion, Fibers, Metals, Art Education, and other majors, handwork demonstrations offer free intensive instruction in techniques from lacemaking and beading to fashion illustration. Learn a new skill and get a new perspective on Mary McFadden's unique vision in this interactive exhibition and project space.
The Project Room was inspired by a desire to get closer to McFadden’s fashions. Viewers of her sophisticated designs and labor-rich handwork may wish they could touch the McFadden gowns, their luxurious fabrics, beaded surfaces, gold threads, and metal embroidery. The Gallery Education staff offers the chance to touch, try on, try out, and explore at display stations and demonstrations in the Project Room.
Visit once or often. Investigate textile, jewelry, and fashion design up close. Try out the techniques used in McFadden’s designs, experiment with traditional garb from around the world, and learn a few new skills from MassArt students. Connect with Mary McFadden's historical and cultural influences and discover related design work by MassArt students. You may add your stitches to the group embroidery or create a beautiful braid or macramé band.
Demonstrations Demonstrations will take place in the Project Room daily between October 12th and 30th. Sign-up sheets will be posted outside the gallery or you can sign up online. Space is limited; reserve your slot now! Everything is free!
